Chapter Five:
This is Not. Sudden.

"Is he now?" He smiled and his lip twitched.

"Yes…" John read the page again, this time more intently. "You've questioned him already?"

"Yes."

"And??" The question was sharp.

"And I have found him innocent. Possibly the most innocent person of any mentioned within that file."

"Are you sure?"

The question annoyed him… Was he sure? Of course he was sure. He had done this for years and had never once been wrong. He could say with absolute certainty after he questioned a man whether or not he'd had anything to do with a crime committed. John knew that! But now he suddenly doubted Holmes. Why? Because of Mary.

"Of course I am sure. I am always sure."

"Holmes, I need you to be positive, this is my futu-"

"Your future father in law, yes, I know what he will become once you wed Mary."

"Don't take up an attitude, Holmes…"

"I am not." He sniffed. "I'm merely assuring you that, yes, your beloved's father is innocent."

"Does she know about this?"

"I expect she will now, he's had ample time to inform her."

John rose, putting his tea things away.

"Then I'm going over to see her, to make sure she's all right."

This needled him further. Of course he was going. He was just presented with the information of a case he was to help solve, he needed to study those notes rather than bloody skim them, possibly examine the coroner's reports, and help Holmes to muddle through this, and he was leaving.

"You're not going to finish reading?"

"Later."

"Watson, later may produce another body, rather than solutions. I would feel better if you read those, at least the coroner's notes. You're the expert there, not I."

"Holmes, you are the expert on everything, as you yourself have said on many occasions. You'll be fine."

"I'd rather you gave me your opinion now."

"Holmes, I don't have the time."

"But you have the time for her!" Suddenly he was shouting and on his feet, taking even himself quite by surprise.

"Of course I have time for her, Holmes." John's gaze was steady, almost cold. "She is my fiancé. And you will have to accept that."

"You've known her less than a quarter of the time you have known me. Not only that, but I assure you, she cannot help you or me solve this case. I don't remember the last time you were fully involved in a case, and this one in particular carries quite a bit of weight!"

"They are dead housekeepers, Holmes. Three of them. Don't lie, you have seen far worse. These are… Sloppy compared to some." John glanced at the file again. "I will read them when I return."

"Fine." He sat. "Go. Stay there for all I care, John, I may as well get used to living alone. Solving cases on my own. Right?"

"Why is this suddenly an issue, Holmes?" John spread his hands exasperatedly.

"Suddenly?" He barked out a laugh. "You're losing that keen sense of observation. This is not. Sudden."

There was silence as John stared at him, mouth agape. His eyes darted over Holmes' face, and he appeared to be struggling for words.

"I…"

"You what? Hadn't noticed? I gathered." He turned away. "Go, John. Mary needs you, and God knows you've got the time now."

"Holmes…"

"I said go, John."
Next chapter. You'll have to wait for :iconxxspike17xx: to see if John leaves or not.
